People seam to be the same as ever

This project is composed of digital street photography shot in New York, Las Vegas, and San Francisco. As a first-year student in college in a country that is not my own I have spent a lot of time observing people. According to my careful observations, people here seem to be the same as everywhere else. They go places, they talk, they smile. I, however, feel like I struggle to integrate myself in the fabric of things. I stay there a bit, watch, and then leave without touching anything. The subjects of this series are places that people pass through, and people who pass through those places. Street photography is also good for reflecting upon the matter of a journey because all of the photographs have been taken on walks through the cities.

This body of work is a reflection on loneliness, isolation, and passing through. I am interested in a contrast between the places we go to versus the places we stay while we are getting to the intended destination. What does it mean to be passing through? When does it feel like you have reached your destination? If one is always in motion, if one’s position relative to the surroundings is always temporary, it is impossible to belong to one place in particular. Isolation seems to be inherent to passing through. The destination seems to be the thing that offers comfort, home, and community. But the destination is nowhere to be seen.
